Obama: Our Mission in Niger Has Begun
AT LEAST 100 MILITARY PERSONNEL STATIONED NEXT TO MALI
Cop Canned Over ‘Police Threats’ to Obama, 1st Lady
BUT ALLEGED BAD-BOY COPS ALSO LOST THEIR JOBS
(NEWSER) – So much for speaking up: Richmond police have fired a whistleblowing cop for claiming that two officers chatted about shooting and bombing President Obama while protecting him, Raw Story reports. The officer, who wasn’t named, told WTVR last May that a supervisor had said to a police sharpshooter, “You’re down there right? So, you can take a couple of shots, you might have to kill yourself, but you can take a couple of shots.”
The supervisor allegedly discussed planting a bomb under the stage and dissed Michelle Obama, who was also there: “Nobody wants to see her anyway—unless she gets undressed or get [sic] naked.” The whistleblowing cop said he was fired for ignoring department policy and giving the TV station an interview. But the two officers involved also lost their jobs: “Their careers were ended and they have gone through eight months of hell” over “false allegations,” their lawyer tellsWTVR.

Monster Goldfish Invade Lake Tahoe
INVASIVE SPECIES COULD DAMAGE THE ECOSYSTEM
(NEWSER) – Planning a vacay to Lake Tahoe? You may well encounter goldfish that are 1.5 feet long and weigh more than 4 pounds, Scientific American reports. Researchers trolling for invasive species encountered the massive goldfish and say pet owners may have dumped them. That act of good will, however, could damage the lake’s ecosystem when the goldfish eat native species and excrete a nutrient that muddies the water by causing algal blooms.
So-called fish dumping is nothing new: “Globally, the aquarium trade has contributed a third of the world’s worst aquatic and invasive species,” says the lead author of a report on California’s aquarium trade. Owners often discard them because the fish are too big and aggressive, he adds. As for the monster goldfish, only 15 have been found so far, swimming “in a nice corner,” says a scientist. “It’s an indication that they were schooling and spawning.

(NEWSER) – An empty Russian cruise ship lost at sea for weeks has turned up some 1,300 nautical miles off Ireland’s west coast, reports AFP via PhysOrg. The Lyubov Orlova was being towed from Canada to the Dominican Republic when a tug line broke in late January, setting it adrift. One subsequent attempt to secure it failed, leading to fears the ship would be lost for good, but authorities hold out hope they’ll be able to corral it. “I’m trying my best,” ship owner Reza Shoeybi tells Canada’s CBC News. “I’m talking to a few people in Ireland—salvage companies—perhaps to partner up with them and retrieve her.” One big snag: Its GPS system is no longer functioning as it drifts toward Europe, notes Gizmodo.
The ship had been docked at a Newfoundland port for two years before the decision was made to have it towed away for scrap. And even though its only passengers are now rats, a French environmental group says it poses an “imminent” risk, reports a separate AFP story. It has no functioning lights for one thing. “In case of a collision or sinking or any accident, the Lyubov Orlova will immediately release fuel, pyralene and other toxic liquids,” the group says.
Hizbullah Man Tracked Israeli Flights in Cyrpus by Maayana Miskin
A Hizbullah terrorist working in Europe was told to track passenger flights from Israel to Cyprus, the New York Times reports based on testimony the man gave Thursday evening during his trial.
Suspect Hossam Taleb Yaacoub reportedly contradicted earlier testimony and admitted that his handler had told him to track landing times for an Arkia Israel flight between Tel Aviv and Larnaca. He had previously explained multiple trips to the airport as the result of a faulty rental car that had to be returned.
Yaacoub also admitted to being “an active member of Hizbullah,” and said the group had paid him $600 a month since 2010.
He told the court that he had a code name, explaining, “In general, the party is based on secrecy between members. We don’t know the real names of our fellow members.”
Yaacoub, 24, has claimed that he was not knowingly involved in planning an attack. Prosecutors say he was aware that his handlers were planning to kill Israeli citizens in Cyprus.
Last summer Israeli citizens were targeted in a bus bombing in Burgas, Bulgaria that investigators have since linked to Hizbullah. Five Israeli citizens and one Bulgarian man were murdered in the attack.
Yaacoub admitted to writing down the license plates of two buses used to transport Israeli tourists in Cyprus.
President Shimon Peres called again Thursday for the European Union to recognize Hizbullah as a terrorist group. The EU has previously rejected calls to label Hizbullah a terrorist group, arguing that the group’s “active political arm” makes the “terrorist” label inappropriate.
Israel’s Home Front Commander, Avi Dichter, derided the EU’s reluctance to condemn Hizbullah as“almost a joke.”
