Deaf Theatre: Singing with hands, hearing with eyes (RT Documentary)

They sing with their hands and hear with their eyes. Actors from the Nedoslov Theater are hard-of-hearing or completely deaf. Most come to the theater after graduating from the Russian State Special Institute of Arts. RT looks at their lives inside and outside the theater.

This documentary was shot in the Chukotka region – the most eastern part of Russia and of the whole Eurasia. Chuvans are a small indigenous people. They live far from the civilization, but are absolutely satisfied by their life because they have something really valuable.

THE NANAY AND THE ULCHIS

The Amur river is the main waterway in the Russian Far East. Eight indigenous peoples live on its banks. Among them are the Nanay and the Ulchis – the peoples who speak different languages but collectively call themselves Nani, which means “the people of this land”. The cult of nature and shamanism are their traditional beliefs. They have always built their relationships with nature on the principles of respect and worship. The next installment of Faces of Russia series is dedicated to the original culture of the Nanay and the Ulchis.

The word “Chukchi” means “rich in reindeer”. It also refers to a people who live in the Russian Far East, who can’t imagine a life without their time-honored traditions: hunting, cooking, engraving beautiful pictures on walrus tusks and praying with their shamans.
