Measles Reports in America:
What Does It Mean?
On Sept. 12, 2013, public health officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) called a press conference to announce that vaccination rates among pre-school children are “high and stable” and “less than 1% are unvaccinated.” More than 90 percent of American toddlers have gotten a measles containing MMR shot by age three, along with many doses of 10 other government recommended vaccines.
159 Measles Cases Reported This Year in U.S.
But health officials warned there have been 159 cases of measles reported so far this year, the second highest number of measles cases reported in one year since 2000. They put the blame on 92 unvaccinated Americans diagnosed with measles who had “philosophical objections” to vaccination, such as orthodox Jews in New York City and Christians attending a church in Texas, which they described as “clusters of people with like-minded beliefs leading them to forgo vaccines.”
There have been no measles-related deaths in the U.S. this year; however one government official said that 160,000 people around the world die from measles every year and the infection is “literally a plane ride away.” She warned that “the measles virus can hang out in the air and if you are in the same waiting room as someone with measles you will get measles if you never had it.”
Americans Born Before 1957 Have Natural Immunity
In the interest of full disclosure, I should acknowledge that when I was a child I did get measles and so did my sister and brother and all my friends. It started off with a fever, runny nose, sore throat and white spots inside our mouths and then an itchy red rash on our faces that spread all over and I remember wearing sunglasses in the house because the light hurt my eyes. My parents and grandparents and their sisters and brothers also had measles when they were children. When I was growing up in the 1950’s, measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox were infections we all experienced but our parents didn’t worry about those childhood diseases like they worried about polio.

What You Need To Know About New Flu Vaccines This Year
Dr. Joseph Mercola interviewed NVIC’s Barbara Loe Fisher about the 12 different types of influenza vaccines on the market for the first time this year, including flu shots containing four influenza strains and two new genetically engineered flu vaccines using dog kidney cells or caterpillar (army worm) cells for production. More Sacramento Parents Making Vaccine Choices.
Sacramento officials say 850 children attending Sacramento schools in 2013 have a medical, religious or personal belief exemption on file with schools, 475 more children than had exemptions in 2008. In 2014, parents filing a personal belief exemption for children first will have to get the signature of a state-approved doctor or medical worker. Defending the religious and personal belief exemptions, NVIC’s Barbara Loe Fisher said, “It has been very hard for parents of children who have reactions to vaccines to be able to put their children in school.” News 10 (ABC) Sept. 17, 2013.

New Research Raises Red Flags for Flu Vaccine Development!!!!!
Using piglets, researchers evaluated the effect of the H1N2 influenza vaccine on antibodies and their potential role in making respiratory symptoms worse. After receiving the H1N2 vaccine, the pigs developed antibodies that protected them from the H1N2 influenza virus strain, but those same antibodies made them more vulnerable to infection with the H1N1 influenza virus strain. The cross-reactive antibodies bound to the hemagglutinin stem of the H1N1 virus, which helped attach the virus to the cells and worsened respiratory symptoms. Because development of universal flu vaccines target the hemagglutinin stems, the researchers warned others to consider these findings.

Universal Flu Vaccine “Holy Grail’ Research: Trying to Understand Natural Resistance to Severe Illness
An experiment based on the experiences of students, who got H1N1 swine flu in 2009, is assisting British scientists trying to create a “universal” influenza vaccine that would prevent infection with multiple influenza strains. The study’s leader Ajit Lavani said “The Holy Grail is to create a universal vaccine that would be effective against all strains of flu.” The vaccine developers collected blood samples from students during the 2009 H1N1 swine flu pandemic in order to determine why some individuals resist getting a severe case of influenza. They found that people, who got influenza and had no symptoms or only mild symptoms, had more CD8 T-cells in their blood. Their goal now is to make a vaccine that stimulates the body to product more CD8 T-cells “to protect people against symptomatic illness.”

News Source Points Out Twisted Facts in Mainstream Media’s Account of Texas Church Measles Outbreak
Health Impact News, a news source independent of mainstream media, highlighted factual errors in the stories about Eagle Mountain International Church in Texas, a Christian church where 21 members were diagnosed with measles this summer. Many media articles have alleged that the church and its leadership advised against use of vaccines. However, the church clearly states it has no position on vaccination, has never preached against vaccination and tells members it is a personal decision. Media sources also have suggested that all of the cases of measles associated with the church occurred in unvaccinated people, which has not been substantiated. Reportedly some of the measles cases occurred in vaccinated individuals.

Physician Blogger Calls for Civility in Debate About Vaccination
Dr. Lissa Rankin blogs about the importance of seeing both sides of an issue and respecting individual perspectives and health care choices. She said she finds it troubling how “up in arms” people get when talking about vaccination and said “there’s nothing wrong with a heated debate and everyone has the right to his or her own opinion” but emphasized the debate should not get “personal and mean.” Rankin declined to self identify as either an adherent of western medicine or natural medicine because she supports critical thinking about medical issues and making individualized decisions.
